Discover one of Lake Taupō’s hidden gems on this spectacular 17km guided hike along the Waihora section of the Great Lake Trails — combining remote wilderness, incredible lake and mountain views, and a scenic boat journey to finish the day.

Your adventure begins with a scenic 40-minute transfer to the western side of Lake Taupō, travelling through rolling farmland along the way. Keep an eye out for deer, sheep and cattle as you catch your first stunning views across the lake.

After the first 3km of hiking, you’ll reach dramatic cliffs with incredible views across Lake Taupō towards the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park — including Mt Ngauruhoe, famously known as “Mt Doom” from The Lord of the Rings.

From here, the trail climbs through beautiful native bush, opening up to even more impressive views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Cross small bridges over clear streams and discover the famous Echo Rock as you make your way deeper into this peaceful and remote part of Lake Taupō.

After completing the 17km Waihora hike, you’ll emerge on the shores of Lake Taupō where your boat will be waiting.
