Follow the Waikato River to a Spectacular Finale

Discover one of Taupō’s most impressive stretches of the Waikato River on this guided hike from the mighty Huka Falls to Aratiatia Dam.

-Your experience begins at the FourB base on Huka Falls Road, just a short walk from Huka Falls. From here, your guide will take you down to experience the falls before joining the riverside trail towards Aratiatia Dam.

-Leaving the bustle of Huka Falls behind, the trail follows the Waikato River through native bush and an ever-changing volcanic landscape. Along the way there are beautiful viewpoints, hidden corners and plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery.

-Your local FourB guide brings the landscape to life, sharing stories about the Waikato River, Taupō's volcanic history, hydroelectric power and the surrounding area, while pointing out some of the special places and features that are easily missed when walking independently.

-The hike finishes at Aratiatia Dam, where we time our arrival for one of the day's highlights — the famous Aratiatia Dam release.

-Watch as the floodgates open and the quiet riverbed below is transformed by a huge surge of water rushing through the narrow gorge. It's an impressive finale to your journey along the Waikato River.

-After the release, your FourB shuttle will be waiting at Aratiatia to return you comfortably to our base.

Tour Details

Departure: 9.30am. 
Please arrive at the FourB base, 413 Huka Falls Road, 15 minutes before departure.

Walking distance: Approximately 8.5km

Difficulty: Beginner-friendly walking trail. A moderate level of fitness is recommended.

Duration: Approximately 2.5–3 hours, including the Aratiatia Dam release and return transfer.
