Follow the Waikato River to an Explosive Finale

Discover one of Taupō’s most spectacular stretches of the Waikato River on this guided hike from Huka Falls to Aratiatia Dam.

Your adventure begins at our FourB base, just a short walk from the mighty Huka Falls. From here, we head down to experience the falls before joining the trail and following the Waikato River towards Aratiatia Dam. 

Leaving the bustle of Huka Falls behind, the trail winds alongside the river through native bush, with beautiful viewpoints, changing landscapes and plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the scenery.

Along the way, your local guide will share stories about the Waikato River, the volcanic landscape and the surrounding area, pointing out some of the special places you might otherwise walk straight past.

Our destination is Aratiatia Dam, where we time our arrival to watch the famous dam release. See the peaceful riverbed transform as the floodgates open and a huge surge of water fills the narrow gorge below — an impressive finale to your hike.

After watching the release, our FourB shuttle will be waiting to take you back to our base.

Depature Time: This tour begins at 10am. Please arrive at our base (413 Huka falls rd) 15mins prior. 

Hike length: The trail is 8.5km long and is rated as a beginner walking trail, a moderate level of fitness is recommended.  A small snack and water is provided. 

Our shuttle will collect your group from Aratiatia Dam at 12:30pm
